Experience
I have 10 years' experience as a certificated teacher in the Tahoma school district. I specialized in academic support for reading, writing, and math. This included development of and participation in the Walk to Read program, the Writing Lab and the Math Lab. I hold a bachelor's degree in English, and a master's degree in elementary education. I believe that with the right support, every student can learn required grade level material. It is my mission as a tutor to help students grow in academic skills and confidence. I use language and methods students understand and enjoy, and I am encouraging without being patronizing. Young children seem to love me, and I'm still relatable ("cool" enough) for fifth and sixth graders. I hold students accountable and share with them the responsibility for their learning. I believe parental support of learning is essential, so I tend to communicate readily with parents, and encourage parents to share with me their concerns and observations.
